When We Grow Up

It appears that the Pussycat Dolls are the new Spice Girls /
feminists of the 21st Century, what with their guy bashing [read : I
Don’t Need a Man] and female liberation [read : When I Grow Up]

When I Grow Up is the first single from the Dolls’ new album, Doll Domination [a-ha! Reminiscent of Spiceworld much?], since the departure of Carmit. Meaning that the Dolls are now a 5-piece band group.

Now kindly click on the video link below to listen / see the song, if you haven’t already.

Here are the lyrics incase you through you heard “Boobies” I did!

[Intro, x2]
Boys call you sexy (What’s up, sexy)
And you don’t care what they say
See, everytime you turn around
They scream your name

[Verse 1]
Now I’ve got a confession
When I was young I wanted attention
And I promised myself that I’d do anything
Anything at all for them to notice me

[Bridge]
But I ain’t complaining
We all wanna be famous
So go ahead and say what you wanna say
You know what it’s like to be nameless
Want them to know what your name is
‘Cause see when I was younger I would say

[Chorus]
When I grow up
I wanna be famous
I wanna be a star
I wanna be in movies

When I grow up
I wanna see the world
Drive nice cars
I wanna have groupies

When I grow up
Be on TV
People know me
Be on magazines

When I grow up
Fresh and clean
Number one chick when I step out on the scene

[Hook x2]
Be careful what you wish for ’cause you just might get it
You just might get it
You just might get it

[Verse 2]
They used to tell me I was silly
Until I popped up on the TV
I always wanted to be a superstar
And knew that singing songs would get me this far

[Bridge]
But I ain’t complaining
We all wanna be famous
So go ahead and say what you wanna say
You know what it’s like to be nameless
Want them to know what your name is
‘Cause see, when I was younger I would say

[Chorus]
When I grow up
I wanna be famous
I wanna be a star
I wanna be in movies

When I grow up
I wanna see the world
Drive nice cars
I wanna have groupies

When I grow up
Be on TV
People know me
Be on magazines

When I grow up
Fresh and clean
Number one chick when I step out on the scene

[Hook x2]
Be careful what you wish for ’cause you just might get it
You just might get it
You just might get it

[Verse]
I see them staring at me
Oh I’m a trendsetter
Yes this is true ’cause what I do, no one can do it better
You can talk about me
‘Cause I’m a hot topic
I see you watching me, watching me, and I know you want it

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

The lyrics have been disturbing me the whole time during Bikram’s Yoga class It’s rather difficult having to do a toe stand whilst the song is in your head ”When I grow up, lalalalalaaaa”

Since when did you not have to work hard to get something you want?

“Be careful what you wish for ’cause you just might get it
You just might get it
You just might get it”

So let’s say I wish for a raise. According to the lyrics, I have to be careful as I *MAY* get a raise. What a load of crap. I’d have to bust my ass and stick my head into my own ass before I’d get a RM1 million raise.

Apparently, according to PCD, all girls want to be superstars when they grow up. Well, whatever happened to “When I grow up, I wanna be :

A Scientist

Translator

Doctor

Nurse

Firefighter

Etc etc etc?

What if a Doll who joined made up her mind that she wants to be a doctor repairing cleft palates worldwide?! Would she then not be “cool”?

They are propagating the minds of our youth with thoughts of being famous! Would being famous really be our children’s top priority? Since when, did we become a highly self-centric society?

With the advent of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and the like, being “seen” and “tagged” in photos is the new “cool” thing.

Lugging around a digital camera and being seen [and photographed or ‘shopped in] is the thing to do.

Whatever happened to nice, good ol’ fashioned values?

Are we becoming international exhibitionists at the rate of our morality sinking into further depths?

  1. What innane lyrics..!

  2. they are called The Pussycat Dolls. What didcha expect? lol

We’ve always been heading down the route to a self-centric society since the boom of the consumerism era. Since Henry Ford said that you can paint his cars in any color you want. Plus we are all different people, and we are screaming to express our individualism (sure as heck beats living in a socialist state).

As for photo-taking/shopping.. hey.. we are all voyeurs & exhibitionists too. If we didn’t enjoy seeing other peoples photos, and vice versa, or sharing experiences (pictures do tell a thousand words) this wouldn’t be as popular as it is now.. 🙂

  3. I think it’s next to impossible to find a girl who isn’t materialistic to some extent. Even a feminist. If you are talking about empowerment, you are talking about the one thing that makes the world go round – money. If you are talking about appearance, then you are talking about clothes, the car you drive, the place you stay, etc. It’s just something that can’t be avoided anymore..

As for bloggers coming off as poserish.. hehe, I hope I don’t quite fall into that category for you :P, but I do agree – I just read a few other blogs, all harping on that new phone they bought, or that new LCD TV in their living room, etc.. but well, you have to understand that among these people, these things are worth sharing between themselves. Owning new ‘material’ items IS an experience. Meeting that celebrity IS an experience. It’s just unfortunate that, that’s all they have to share…

BTW, I do think that blogs ARE a showing off platform of sorts. You show off where you’ve been, what you’ve been doing, what you are thinking, what you are getting.. It’s just how transparent you make it. Lol

  4. hey.. i can’t view that pic u posted on ur blog.. was it the one with the shadow of muffin? but the model looks so slim one…. that one ka?

oh.. i heard boobies too=.= even AFTER the warning and i was mindlessly listening to it.. i heard “when i grow up i wanna have big boobs” or something.. hahaha

  5. haha…the pussycat dolls…well they fit the image nicely…im sure they said boobies…but they dont show it on the lyrics…mind games…maybe..
